Are cheap fragrances a good choice?
What makes one type of fragrance better than another?
Is the price always a good determinant of quality – and how much does a perfume really cost?
We’re here to explain exactly why expensive perfumes aren’t necessary, and why we at Rosa Salas want to give you the highest quality perfume but at a fraction of a cost.
When it comes to fragrances, it’s not as easy as you think to recognise an expensive perfume over a cheap perfume. Infact, price is not always a determinant of quality because a brand of perfume is determined solely by what people are willing to pay. If you smell a nice smell – it could be a £20 scent and not £160 scent – if it’s nice it’s nice – and if it’s high quality, it’s high quality. Do you really need a designer brand to determine this? Clearly not. A study based around the use of over 10,000 fragrances discovered people do not prefer the pricier alternatives on the market – instead, natural scents such as jasmine and mint were found to be the most popular choices.
When quality doesn’t have to break the bank
It’s easy to fall into the trap people of thinking that paying more for something means it will be better than something with a lower price tag – but it doesn’t have to be this way. When it comes to big brands and designer fragrances, you aren’t only paying for the quality of the perfume, but you’re also paying for its name. Sound familiar?
The question therefore is, is it worth paying so much more just because of the brand? In our opinion – probably not; a higher price doesn’t mean better quality, infact if you do a quick search online you’ll find that that the cost of expensive perfume is mostly due to a combination of three factors:
Ingredients, Marketing, Packaging.
Let’s break down ingredients. Yes, some ingredients can be expensive than others; the rarer the ingredient, the more expensive it will be, especially natural ones. However, the vast majority of fragrance manufactures on the market are not spending that kind of money on ingredients. You aren’t getting anything out the ordinary, which leads us to our point that people actually prefer simpler and CHEAPER fragrances – because they are made from the same ingredients – yet you don’t have the price tag. A scientific study can back this up too, after researchers at Imperial College London found that that you aren’t paying for the quality of expensive big brands, you’re infact paying for their expensive advertising campaigns and expensive packaging and bottles. The price and the age of a perfume did not have an effect on whether fragrances were liked.
